- INTRODUCTION TO PDEL
-
- PDEL is a program designed to PERMANENTLY remove a file from a disk by
- overwriting all of the file's data before removing the file entry from
- the disk. PDEL deletes only one file at a time and does NOT accept wild
- cards. PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN USING PDEL!
-
- This is Version 2 of PDEL, and it differs from Version one in the
- following manners:
-
- - Faster, up to 10 times faster at deleting the files data
- - More bullet proof, no more system hangs when crossing disks or
- directories.
- - Directory information provided. Enter ? at the Enter File Name:
- prompt to get a directory from any device on your system.
-
- WHY USE PDEL?
-
- Most of the time, the standard DOS DEL command is fine for removing a
- file from the disk directory, but of course the data is still on the
- disk and can be recovered by such programs as DISK REPAIR or NORTON
- UTILITIES. However, sometimes you want to be assured that the data is
- permanently removed, especially on a shared system, a system with a
- multi-use hard drive, or a Local Area Network. In this case, PDEL is
- the correct solution. Because PDEL overwrites the data of the specified
- file (and only the specified file), the data cannot be recovered, even
- by the above mentioned programs; the data is gone.
-
- OK, I KNOW WHAT IS DOES, NOW HOW DO I USE PDEL.
-
- At the DOS prompt enter PDEL. After the program header is displayed,
- the program issues the message:
-
- Enter ? for Directory
-
- FILE NAME:
-
- If you want to display a directory enter "?".
- Now either touch Enter for the current directory or enter the directory
- path. After the directory has been listed the FILE NAME: prompt is
- again issued.
-
- Now enter the name of the file which you want to Permanently Delete and
- touch enter. The size of the file is listed and a wait message appears.
- When the file has been deleted the program issues the message FILE HAS
- BEEN PERMANENTLY DELETED and you have the option of deleting another file
- or exiting the program.
-
- That's all there is to it. Again, no wildcards may be used because the
- risk of catastrophic results are too great.
